- You can either let the sunflower heads dry naturally on the plant or cut the heads when the back of them turn yellow. If you cut them, keep them in a cool, ventilated area. I usually just keep mine on my covered patio in an opened cardboard box. When the head are completely dry and brown, the seeds will also be dry. Removing the seeds is tedious, and I just spend 10-15 minutes here and there. I keep my seeds in a large brown paper bag and every couple of days I just toss a handful or two o
- You need to make chokecherry jam and crab apple jelly.
- I have never tried those small apples, but by the end of winter the birds have scoffed the lot, so they must be edible. THe wife usually buys sunflower seeds for the bird but this year she thought we could grow our own but we have no experience of how to process them. You should make a video on how you do it. I have scraped away the remains of the stamen heads to expose the seeds below, but when I open a seed they are soft white and raw.
- I've heard of choke berries, but never seen them. Will the birds eat them? Crab apples here (california) are eaten when when pickled in a spicy/sweet brine and some people use them in cooking. My mammoth sunflowers got to be 7 ft. tall this summer and I harvested the sseds for feeding the birds in the winter. Thanks for a great update :)
